MY VIEW OF THE LITTLE AVON One of the best kept secrets of Gloucestershire is the Little Avon river. Many believe that this is a game fishing only river, but how wrong they are. From the start of the syndicate’s waters at Damery and running though to the castle you will find many challenging sections of the river. Here are some of my ramblings on the subject.
We start with brilliant long trotting at Damery along side the road along to and into the deep chub holes at Middle mill. The river open out into the Mill Pool where good Bream the size of a dinner plate can often be caught. On down to towards the A38 where dark brown shapes of big bream can be seen. At the A38 in the fast water trotting for grayling and very big chub can give excellent sport (chub of 6lb plus can be caught on bread). The river now becomes more challenging down to Matford Bridge, but the stalking angler can catch even bigger chub! And line snapping grayling of 3lb plus!. A large shoal of dace tend to hide in this stretch along with the elusive perch.
At Matford the bream reappears along with roach and dace and the large chub. Great sport on a leger, but watch out for eels.
Quickly on down to Browns Mill, much favored by the locals. I have to admit I have not fished much here so it probably has some hidden treasures to be caught and to test my skills on light tackle. Next comes what I call the canal section down to the castle meadow. Giving a chance to have fun with a margin pole to catch a wide variety of fish (generally big minnows!).
Last but not least is the castle meadow, giving the coarse angler the chance to catch flatfish! On the leger and large chub on floating crust. A large shoal of dace tend to hide in this stretch along with the elusive perch.
All along the river from Damery to the Castle Meadow the course fisherman can enjoy their fishing along side the game fisherman.
