The fishing covers nearly 7 miles of the River Little Avon, from Berkeley to Damery near Tortworth in South Gloucestershire. The river from the A38 downstream to the kennels at Berkeley, including 3 pools, is a mixed fishery including notable Trout, Grayling, Chub and Dace. The river upstream form the A38 contains mainly Trout and Grayling. The whole of the river is designated ‘Grayling Water’ by the Environment Agency.
The 75 members of the syndicate are continuously working to improve the environment of the river helped by scientists from the University of Bristol and the E.A. As a result, riverbank erosion is coming under control, so stabilizing the banks. Bank side vegetation is managed to promote biodiversity and allow access to the river for anglers and water quality been improved significantly.
To maintain the fish populations a stocking programme is in place. This includes the addition of natural Wild Brown Trout eggs to supplement the wild stock.
Terry Staniforth, who controls the administration and the game fishing, leads the syndicate. Terry is ably assisted by Ray Daniels who looks after the coarse fishing. The syndicate has six water bailiffs, trained by the Institute of Fisheries Management who all hold current certificates. Poaching has declined, as officers are required to prosecute persistent offenders.
We are regularly present at the annual Berkeley Show in August/September. We are most grateful to the support given to us by the Berkeley Family, Estate and tenant farmers and other landowners.
